P.E. Barcellona & C. Sampaolesi: Ricercare (2026)
Alireza Gholamianoghani: Yadgar (2026)
Francesca Verunelli: In bianco e nero (2021/22)
ARIA is the duo of double bassist Pietro Elia Barcellona and accordionist Carlo Sampaolesi. Though their instruments seem worlds apart, the two voices merge into a single melodic line, one that can surface as a fragile, ethereal breath or erupt in raw, visceral sound. ARIA has collaborated with internationally renowned composers such as Francesca Verunelli, Silver Lion winner at the Venice Biennale, and Simon Steen-Andersen, contributing to the development of new works conceived specifically for the unique combination of double bass and accordion. Alongside its dedication to contemporary music,
ARIA pursues a line of research extending to early and pre-Renaissance repertoire, not as an object of philological reconstruction, but as living material to be reinterpreted. Memories, fragments and practices of the past are traversed and transformed by a contemporary sensibility, in a dialogue where different eras and languages meet. In this field, the duo’s research is grounded in subtle, unstable, constantly changing timbres, in which mutual listening gives rise to a unified sonic organism. Composition, improvisation and reinterpretation coexist in a single process.
Pietro Elia Barcellona is an Italian double bassist, composer, and improviser active in the fields of contemporary and experimental music. His practice unfolds at the intersection of interpretation, improvisation, and composition, exploring the double bass as a site of experimentation and continuous reinvention. Alongside his concert activity, he composes primarily for solo double bass, approaching composition as a natural extension of his instrumental practice and his ongoing exploration of the instrument’s timbral and expressive possibilities. His work has led him to perform at some of the leading international festivals dedicated to new music, including Manifeste (Paris), Gaudeamus Muziekweek (Utrecht), Holland Festival (Amsterdam), Impuls (Graz), Ravenna Festival, and Musikfestival Bern. In these contexts, he has collaborated with composers such as Beat Furrer and Helmut Lachenmann, as well as with ensembles including Ensemble Intercontemporain, Basel Sinfonietta, Collegium Novum Zürich, and Ensemble Aventure. As a soloist, Barcellona has distinguished himself with a practice that combines interpretative rigor with experimentation, developing a highly personal approach to the double bass. In 2025, he was awarded the Kranichsteiner Musikpreis at the Darmstädter Ferienkurse für Neue MusikIn the same year, he received the Coup de cœur at the Nicati Competition in Lucerne, as well as the Second Prize at the John Cage Award in Halberstadt. In 2026, he was also awarded the Fritz Gerber Award at the Lucerne Festival, further recognizing his artistic path and his ongoing research. His work is also documented through several recordings released by labels such as Clean Feed Records, Another Timbre, and Rubber Commune. He studied with musicians including Dario Calderone and Uli Fussenegger. He earned a Bachelor of Music from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam (2022), a Master of Music Performance specializing in contemporary music (2024), and a Master’s degree in Open Creation (2026) from the Hochschule für Musik Basel, supported by the Nicati de Luze Foundation and the Cécile und Albert Kupper Foundation. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Improvisation in Contemporary Music, jointly promoted by Siena Jazz, the Accademia Chigiana, and the Conservatorio di Ferrara.
Carlo Sampaolesi (b. 1997) is an accordionist and performer based in Brussels.
Raised in a family of accordion builders, he develops an artistic research deeply rooted in the theme of memory tied to his instrument. He graduates in Accordion with Corrado Rojac and Claudio Jacomucci, before specializing in contemporary music at the Advanced Master in Contemporary Music, in collaboration with ICTUS Ensemble. Over the years, he collaborates with composers such as Francesca Verunelli, Dmitri Kourliandski, Simon Steen-Andersen, and Thierry De Mey, among others, and performs in Germany, Austria, France, Belgium, Finland, the Netherlands, and Albania. He is a member of ICTUS Ensemble, with which he has curated the artistic direction of a project linked to the dance company Rosas. He has also worked with ensembles and orchestras such as Neue Vocalsolisten, mdi ensemble, Eutopia Ensemble, and the Orchestra del Teatro „La Fenice“ di Venezia, collaborating with artists such as Claron McFadden, Lucy Railton, and Catherine Lamb, among others. He is the creator of the performance for accordion, video, and live electronics Space Is Only Noise, created in 2023 and performed more than 15 times. In 2025 he collaborates on the theatrical performance Ablazione, created together with director Giacomo Lilliù and dramaturg Eliana Rotella. The following year he debuts his project RICHIAMARE, a piece with dancer Diane Madden, choreographed by Jacob Storer. He has given accordion masterclasses at the Conservatories of Bologna, Turin, Lugano, Mantua, Livorno, and Modena.
Entangling breath, body, voice and instruments, the music of the duo of Elisa Azzarà – flute and Margarethe Maierhofer-Lischka, double-bass, explores the possibilities of instrumental chamber music, playing with the vocality and embodiment of music. The pieces present in the program are created in close collaboration with the performers. They include breath, singing and the speaking voice as resonant spaces of the two instruments into the musical sphere. Theatrical gestures, song fragments, natural sounds and bodily noises invite the listeners to experience musicality in a new way.
