Drawing series presented at the exhibition titled Ti\u0161ina<\/em> (meaning silence<\/em> in all ex – Yugoslavian languages) was created during the artist Nevena Aleksovski\u2019s stay at Artist-in-residence programme in Vienna supported by the Ministry of Culture of Slovenia. Nevena was visiting various events taking part at echoraum in September 2024 and was creating spontaneous drawings, sketches, visual notes etc. inspired by the live acts, different experimental sound performances, screenings and discursive programmes at echoraum. Through this series of works the artist aimed to translate various impressions from the sound, experimental and theoretical field into her specific visual language and the medium of drawing. She thus created multi-layered, expressive and fragmented visual work which responded to the spectrum of emotional, mental and spiritual states triggered by rich experimental programme at echoraum.<\/p>\n

Another aspect of this series of works is also the artist\u2019s reflection of the phenomenon of silence as the integral and constitutional part of each sound and musical performance as well as the huge importance of it in our navigating the experience of sound in general. The artist was therefore interested in the possibilities of translating the experience of silence from the sound into the visual field. By titling the exhibition Ti\u0161ina <\/em>which is the word for silence in all of the ex \u2013 Yugoslavian languages, the artist is also referring to the existence of huge ex \u2013 Yugoslavian diaspora in Vienna as well as to various aspects of the questions of identity, integration and migration experiences. Through this series of work she therefore aimed to create visual narratives that are reflecting physical, emotional, symbolic and socio-political nature of silence.<\/p>\n

Nevena Aleksovski<\/strong> (b. 1984) earned her degree in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Novi Sad (RS), in 2008, and furthered her academic journey with a Master’s degree in Cultural Studies from the University of Ljubljana (SI), in 2014. She works mainly in the media of painting, drawing, installation and found objects. She has showcased her work in numerous solo and group exhibitions, among others at \u0160KUC (SI), RAVNIKAR (SI), Britta Rettberg (DE), MGLC (SI), Cukrarna (SI), P74 Gallery (SI), PrivatePrint (MK), NADA Villa Warsaw (PL) as well as at various international art fairs including viennacontemporary, Art Rotterdam, Berlin Art Week, and others. Her work deals mainly with issues of identity, migration, personal geographies and (non)belonging. She lives and works in Ljubljana.<\/p>\n

This duo starts from the desire to create a common language beyond any aesthetic line or tradition, as well as from the conviction that musical understanding goes beyond these categories. In this project Luz Gonz\u00e1lez (live electronics) and Rebecca Minten (bass clarinet) provoke and support each other in equal parts by the use of multiphonics, live processing, sinus tones and pure noise.

Luz\u00a0Gonz\u00e1lez<\/strong> (ESP\/CH) is part of the independent art scene in Bern. Her artistic practice includes composition, sound research and sound art.\u2028She presents a solo project for experimental electronic music since 2022 and is co-founder of the quartett for free improvisation NoRest! With scenographer Annatina Huwiler she explores interdisciplinary sound objects, for example in the works Dysphoria or z\u2019Berg (awarded with the Lis und Roman Clemens Preis).\u2028She is currently working in the electroacoustic duo Minten & Gonz\u00e1lez with clarinetist Rebecca Minten. In 2022 she developed the piece Superorganismus with the contemporary quartet Tramontana.\u2028Her works have been performed in Switzerland (Dampfzentrale, Walcheturm, Prozess, etc.), Germany (ZKM, Anachronismus, Madame Claude), Spain (MUNCYT, Sin Sal) and Northern Ireland (Sonorities Festival Belfast). https:\/\/luzgonzalez.art\/<\/a><\/p>\n

Rebecca Minten<\/strong> (IT\/DE) is a clarinet player, improviser, composer based in Basel (CH). Her practice centres on new music, transdisciplinary creation, and free improvisation. Interested in alternative concert formats, she collaborates on immersive performances involving experimental music across various disciplines and contexts. Additionally, she’s involved in jazz and folk music scenes and curiosity leads her to many more artistic activities to extend her research.\u2028From diverse collaborations, she has co-founded various groups that are currently active in Switzerland and abroad: the Tzupati Orchestra (balkan\/klezmer), IPSO (transdisciplinary collective) and Gonzalez-Minten duo (electro-acoustic composition\/impro).\u2028She participates in festivals such as the Darmst\u00e4dter Ferienkurse f\u00fcr Neue Musik, the Winterthurer Musikfestwochen, Klangspuren Schwaz, Mixtur Festival, zoom-in festival, Biennale Mediterraneo Archipelago, musica Strasbourg, Sonorities Festival Belfast and the Musikfestival Bern, where she’s been leading and creating the sound walk inSENS\u00e9 in 2022.\u2028She took part in the summer academy of the Ensemble Modern Frankfurt 2021 (IEMA) and has been artist-in-residence at the Biennale Mediterraneo Archipelago in Palermo in 2022 and at the Microtonal Music Studio in Helsinki in 2023-24. https:\/\/minten.art\/<\/a><\/p>\n

\nIm Jahr 2013 reisten Noid und Matija Schellander von Wien nach Ostasien, um mit Ryu Hankil und anderen Musikern aus Japan, Hongkong, China, S\u00fcdkorea und Europa zusammenzuarbeiten. Mit Kompositionen, Klangkunstst\u00fccken und Workshop-Materialien im Gep\u00e4ck testeten sie ihre Ideen in verschiedenen sozialen und k\u00fcnstlerischen Kontexten, w\u00e4hrend sie das allt\u00e4gliche Tourleben meisterten.
\nEine Doppel-CD wurde ver\u00f6ffentlicht: Die erste CD, Tokyo Office, zeigt Noid, Schellander und Ryu Hankil in einem intimen Konzert, das im Ftarri-Shop in Tokio aufgenommen wurde. Sie vereint Schreibmaschine, Schlagzeug, Kontrabass, Cello, Jing-Hu und einen viktorianischen Synthesizer zu einer 44-min\u00fctigen Erkundung unmusikalischer Musikalit\u00e4t. Die zweite CD, Field Report, dokumentiert einen Monat voller Auftritte, Feldaufnahmen und Kooperationen, eingebettet in die sich ver\u00e4ndernden Kulissen von Okinawa bis Peking. W\u00e4hrend der Tour traf das Trio Yan Jun in Peking, was den Beginn einer langfristigen Zusammenarbeit markierte. Im Jahr 2024 kommen sie f\u00fcr eine neue Tournee wieder zusammen, wobei Yan Jun als Gast hinzukommt und neue Dimensionen zu ihrer fortlaufenden musikalischen Erkundung hinzuf\u00fcgt.<\/div>\n

Yan Jun<\/strong> (Beijing) ist Musiker und Dichter. Er arbeitet an experimenteller und improvisierter Musik. Er verwendet L\u00e4rm, Feldaufnahmen, K\u00f6rper und Konzepte als Materialien. Manchmal geht er zu den H\u00e4usern des Publikums, um mit einer Plastikt\u00fcte zu spielen.

Ryu Hankil<\/strong> (Seoul) erkundet Kl\u00e4nge au\u00dferhalb der Musik mit einer konspirativen Sicht auf Musik und all die damit verbundenen Konventionen. \nArnold Haberl aka noid<\/strong> (Wien) versteht seine Arbeit als Grundlagenforschung, die zu einer breiten Palette an widerspr\u00fcchlichen Ergebnissen f\u00fchrt. Seine Arbeiten reichen von Cello-Solos und Tonbandst\u00fccken \u00fcber Ensemblekompositionen und Improvisations-Partituren \u00fcber Performances mit elektronischen und hybriden Instrumenten bis zu Sound-Installationen, Videos und imagin\u00e4rer Musik und werden seit vielen Jahren international, auf Festivals Konzerten und in Ausstellungen pr\u00e4sentiert.

Matija Schellander<\/strong> (Wien) ist Komponist, Kontrabassist und elektronischer Musiker. Er arbeitet mit experimenteller Musik, Improvisation und elektroakustischem Klang und konzentriert sich auf die Interaktion zwischen Klang und Raum.
