Vive Les Fant\u00f4mes<\/strong><\/p>\n

Vive Les Fant\u00f4mes is a radio piece I created for German station SWR in 2018. It awarded the renowned Karl Sczuka Prize the same year and was released on Chicago based record label Thrill Jockey 2019. Now I created a live version of it using drums and vibraphone and computer.<\/p>\n

Vive Les Fant\u00f4mes is based on snippets of interviews, rehearsals and performances by people like Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Billie Holiday, Jacques Derrida, Chris Marker and many more, resulting in a network of sound-objects that appear repeatedly and changing their shape throughout the piece. Communication is constructed across different rooms and times, beyond the borders of language and music. Vive Les Fant\u00f4mes is not only a piece of music, it\u2019s rather acoustic cinema with a non-linear narrative layer organized by scenes.<\/p>\n

French philosopher Jacques Derrida answers the phone repeating the same words in various scenes. Sometimes we hear the philosopher simply listening. We imagine him listening. We are listening as well and try to get a hint of who is on the other side of the line. Sometimes there is just silence or static noise. Spoken word transforms to sound, the borders between language and music become blurred.<\/p>\n

Protagonists talk to each other from and to different rooms. They are connected but separated as well. The other side of the line is the unknown. The unknown again is up to our imagination. Silence, the absence of images, the incomplete and the cutup. It is all just a framework, a playground, an invitation for us to complete, connect, to create and construct our very own piece.<\/p>\n

Vive Les Fant\u00f4mes is a celebration of the musical moment, pointing to the past and to the future. Repetition is never only repetition \u2013 it is always creation.<\/p>\n

With Vive Les Fant\u00f4mes, Martin Brandlmayr has crafted a completely novel experiment that works as a love letter to the \u201csound\u201d of sound.<\/em>

Austrian drummer\/composer Martin Brandlmayr\u2019s award winning radio opera Vive Les Fant\u00f4mes (Long live the Ghosts) combines spoken word and jazz samples with experimental electronics and percussion to create a dialogue across time and space. Monk talks sound, Miles issues instructions, and Derrida answers the telephone to speak with an unheard interlocutor. The spectral voices of long gone cultural giants speak of human frailty and the strength of the creative act. Vive Les Fant\u00f4mes poignantly addresses memory and mortality.<\/em>

Martin Brandlmayr<\/strong> arbeitet im Grenzbereich zwischen Improvisation und Komposition bzw an der Schnittstelle zwischen elektronischen und akustischen Klangwelten.\u00a0Er ist Mitglied der Ensembles Polwechsel und Trapist und wurde vor allem durch das 1997 gegr\u00fcndete Trio Radian international bekannt. Mit Radian ver\u00f6ffentlichte er seit Mitte der 90er Jahren insgesamt 7 Alben, 5 davon auf dem US-amerikanischen Label Thrill Jockey.<\/p>\n

Martin Brandlmayr arbeitete mit David Sylvian, Howe Gelb, Christian Fennesz, Ken Vandermark, Otomo Yoshihide; Sachiko M, John Tilbury, Mats Gustafsson, The Necks und vielen mehr. Er ver\u00f6ffentlichte f\u00fcr zahlreiche angesehene Plattenlabels wie Thrill Jockey (USA), Kranky (USA), Staubgold (Deutschland) Hathut (schweiz), Samadhisound (GB), Scape (Deutschland)<\/p>\n

Die Reihe XX Y X widmet sich Werken und Auff\u00fchrungen von Komponistinnen aktueller zeitgen\u00f6ssischer Musik, Performances und Kooperationen bildender K\u00fcnstlerInnen und Musikschaffenden.<\/p>\n

XX Y X ist eine von Michaela Schwentner kuratierte monatlich stattfindende Reihe, die an verschiedenen Orten stattfindet. XX Y X ist Teil des in Wien ans\u00e4ssigen Vereins f\u00fcr nischenmusik und popul\u00e4rkultur liccht.<\/p>\n
